There is something about doing vintage style photos that totally excites me. There is such a strong personality that comes across even in some of the everyday fashion styles from the 50s. Maybe that’s due to watching too much “Happy Days” as a kid, that any guy with a leather jacket and jeans and white t-shirt with slicked up hair had to be as cool as “the Fonz”, or the pony-tailed girl in a poodle skirt and saddle shoes was most likely your sweet sisterly type… the emergence of rock n roll really didn’t discriminate between cool kids and all-american sweethearts though, nor did it matter if you were city-folk or country bumpkins. There was a bit of an amalgamation of music styles as rock n roll was infused with southern country or bluegrass and came to be known as “Rockabilly”. And it’s popularity was catapulted by the likes of Johnny Cash, Elvis, and Carl Perkins. Rockabilly encompasses much more than a music genre though… it’s a statement of style. Rebellious in nature, for the wilder ones, daring colors and more form fitting outfits for the ladies… making for a much racier pinup style that was quite appealing to the hot rodders of the day.
I can’t say I disagree… It’s still very appealing all around. Classic sexy styles, high on bold prints and colors, feminine flair, with a hint of badassery. And music that begs for you to get up and Do Wop is alright with me! I love that SL celebrates this retro era with so many awesome designers in world putting out great vintage goodies…and right now you can find many of them at the Rockabilly Fashion Fair which is in full swing and will continue until November 23rd.
